The Au Sable river begins near the town of Grayling in Northern Michigan. From there, it flows east and empties into Lake Huron at
the town of Oscoda. The river downstream of Mio Dam to the McKinley Bridge is know as the Trophy Waters. Its name derives from special
regulations put in place to grow big trout. Brown and Rainbow trout up to 30" live in this water and make themselves available to the fly
angler. While these big and wiley trout are not easy to catch, you never know when the trout of a lifetime will be pulling on the end
of your line.
The Trophy Waters is home to abundant insect life including hendricksons, sulphurs, drakes, hexes, caddis, stoneflies,
isonychias, euphrons, and more. These insects along with crayfish, sculpins, darters, young trout, and other baitfish provide the diet
necessary for these trout to grow into giants. Due to the vast variety of food available to these trout, they provide the fly angler
with many opportunities. Streamers, dries, and nymphs will all bring trophy trout to the net.
